British Superbikes at TT Circuit Assen, Holland

I know what you might be thinking, how can it be British Superbikes if there’s a round in Holland?! Well the TT Circuit in Assen isn’t nick named the Cathedral of speed for nothing! The penultimate round of BSB has been held in Holland for a number of years and adds something different to the calendar!

Did you catch my recent post, What I learnt from my first motorcycle touring trip? We caught the over night ferry on Thursday night, docking in Rotterdam early on Friday morning. So the ride up to Assen from Rotterdam took around 3.5 hours, with a few comfort breaks along the way!  Factor in a quick stop at the Hotel to drop our bags, we made it at the TT Circuit late Friday afternoon. Which was just in time to catch the end of BSB FP2! The view from the grand stand over looking the Geert Timmer chicane was impressive, and probably the best vantage point at the circuit!

An early start on Saturday morning meant we made it to the track in time for BSB FP3 and the rest of the day’s action including BSB qualifying. And of course some racing!

One of the things I love about BSB is the opportunity you get to walk the pit lane and get up close to the garages.

Me & Tyco BMW’s Michael Laverty

There I was taking some photos of the Ducati garage when one of the mechanics photo bombed one of my pictures. He then offered to take some close up shots for me! So sometimes it pays to get photo bombed!

I even made it up to the podium where lots of racing legends have stood themselves! Valentino Rossi and Marc Marquez to name a few!

6 time BSB Champion Shane Shakey Byrne

Race day came around and it started with a pit lane walk and another chance to meet some of the riders and teams.

Fellow Yorkshire lad & road racing legend Dean Harrison
Me with the Irwin brothers Andrew & Glen

Leon Haslam of JG Speedfit Kawasaki kept up his winning form, winning both 2 races. Jake Dixon his closet rival took second in race 1 but had a technical problem in race 1 that effectively ended his 2018 title hopes!

What an amazing few days in Holland we had! I’m already looking forward to going back next year… maybe for the Moto GP! Have you visited Holland before?
