When it comes to monthly subscription boxes, the choice is so rife at the moment! There really is something for every need. You might have seen my review of Gentlemen’s order, which is a a monthly shaving subscription box. I’d like to give you the lowdown on a relatively new men’s grooming subscription box by Gruum.
Pronounced “Groom” they offer a range of shaving, beard and skincare products tailored to suit the individuals needs. Gruum was inspired from Scandinavian design ideals, which is clear to see from the minimalistic branding and each product has been given its own unique Scandinavian name.
Before you order your Gruum box, they will ask a few questions about you, your style and your daily routine. They will then propose a selection of daily grooming products from their beard, cleanse and shave ranges to suit your very needs. Your custom box will then be delivered direct to your door.
I’m really not sure what to make of the minimalist design approach, especially as grooming products. The minimal plain branding could give a wrong impression that the products themselves are cheap. I’m sure they’d stand out amongst other brands though.
There are no directions for use on the products themselves. I feel this is quite important to be able to use the products to their full capacity. Although, directions for use can be found on the Gruum website.
All the products are made with natural ingredients, each having slightly different variations, giving them their own fragrance such as the daily moisturiser that contains cedarwood, sage and rosemary. and have a herby scent to them.
Exfoliating face wash
It’s hard to find a face wash that isn’t too coarse and has a nice balance. This face wash feels really nice to use and the cleansing beads aren’t too coarse and aggressive, which some exfoliating face washes can have a tendency to be. It’s got a lovely refreshing an invigorating fragrance from the orange and eucalyptus and the aloe vera and witch hazel soothe and calm the skin.
This is probably my favourite product in the Gruum range, think of it as a deep facial toner. To use, just apply a few drops on to a cotton wool pad and wipe over your facial areas. It’s fantastic at removing any dirt and oil build up from your skin’s pores. This product will definitely be staying in my daily skincare routine.
The beard wash has been specially formulated for facial hair and is blended with essential oils to help maintain natural balance to your beard. I found the beard wash lathered up well and left it feeling clean and soft. As with the face wash, it has a similar fresh smelling scent that’s really invigorating. I have to say, this is one of my better beard washes I’ve come across.
The moisturiser has a really nice thick consistency, though it’s not the fastest absorbing cream I’ve come across. Because of the added natural oils, the moisturiser did leave a very slight oily feel to my skin. But, I found it to be good rehydrating everyday face cream and its natural formula is ideal for protecting against cold, dry air. As with some of the other products in the range, the fragrance is quite herby owing to some of its main ingredients, sage and rosemary oil.
The hard consistency of the beard wax make for quite difficult application. Once you’ve managed to warm up a small amount in your fingers, it does help to nourish and soften your beard. The earth fragrance is quite sharp and the thyme and rosemary notes really stand out. For me, spearmint would be better as the dominant note in the scent. Gruum have really thought of everything though. Knowing fragrance is very much a matter of personal taste, they have it available in 3 different scents; wood and citrus being the other 2. Either of these sound like their both suited to my tastes.
A few drops of the beard oil help to maintain a conditioned and healthy beard. Its added Vitamin E helps to moisturise the skin beneath your facial hair. As with the beard wax, the thyme and rosemary are quite dominant and a bit overpowering. I don’t really want to smell similar to a herb garden! As with the beard wax, I would definitely give the other fragrances a try!
I’ve been really impressed with the quality of the products in the Gruum range. Although some of the products are relatively small sizes, as its a monthly subscription service, there’s certainly enough to last for a months use These are definitely products I’d use again, and I’d love to try one of the other fragrances in the beard wax and beard oil range. Check out Gruum for more information or to place an order.
