Following on from my outfit post from our Woodland Lodge Stay, I’d like to share with you my review of our experience. We’d stumbled across an amazing looking place called North Star Club that offers luxurious, getaway breaks in private cabins set in 500 acres of native woodland in the Yorkshire Wolds.
North Star Club has 8 private woodland suites that are rustic but with a modern twist. We’d booked to stay on the Sunday of Halloween weekend… (a bit spooky I know!) and had Monday booked off work. The on site check in time was between 4 and 7pm so this gave us opportunity to stop off for Sunday lunch. We chose The Aldwark Arms in the village of Aldwark in the Vale of York (full review post coming soon)
We arrived about 5pm following a longer than expected drive from Aldwark, where we found there was no one on site to let us in. It was really dark when we arrived, which made finding our way round the site that bit harder. Luckily, I found some other guests who were able to let us in the amazing Wood Shed, (communal chill out area) where we could at least make a cup of tea. It did give us chance to have a look around and take some great photographs!
After around an hour’s wait, we eventually got through to the business owners who were very apologetic for the situation and were able to talk us through how to get the key for our lodge. We had booked to stay in the Moon suite, but because of the mix up with our booking it wasn’t ready. Instead we got the Woodville suite, which we were told was very similar. It was a bit tricky to find in the dark, but I think this made it feel all the more real, after all we were in the middle of a forest!
When we finally got into the cabin, we weren’t disappointed, it was tastefully decorated and had quirky features such as a Stag’s head and fur rugs that give it a real woodland lodge feel. The mood lighting in the bedroom looked superb (although our cameras might not of quite agreed)!
The large spacious bathroom was absolutely fantastic, having a large bath and separate walk in shower. I loved the mix of old and new in here, it just seemed to work so well!
Having a soak in the huge bath with a drink was just the perfect way to wind down and relax. The bathroom included some nice little touches like the tea lights round the edge of the bathroom and fur covered chair gave it a inviting feel.
What woodland cabin doesn’t come without its very own log burning fire? It created such a nice cosy room, just what was needed on a Autumnal evening. I also learnt how to build the perfect log fire, its not as easy as you’d think!
After a relaxing bath, it was time to indulge in some food cooked on the gas barbecue and have a few drinks on the huge veranda. There were a couple of places to eat nearby, such as The Star at Sancton, but we chose the more convenient dine in option. There wasn’t much in the way of outdoor lighting, apart from the fairy lights, but this made it all the more fun and made the woodland experience feel more real. After a quite a few more honey whiskies, it was time to get some well earnt rest.
The next day we woke up and opened the curtains to such an amazing view! Sitting out on the veranda, it was so nice and peaceful listening and watching leaves falling, the pheasants calling and squirrels searching for nuts. It made me not want to leave, it’s not everyday you get to wake up slap bang in the middle of a forest and amongst so much nature!
We took our own provisions to make a delicious cooked breakfast of bacon, sausage, beans and black pudding, all cooked on the gas barbecue of course! It was a bit challenging with only one gas ring on the barbecue, but some creative cooking ideas sorted it out so everything was cooked at the same time.
Check out time was 10am, which gave us enough time to get a shower and pack our stuff up. Once we were ready, we couldn’t resist having a wander round the site and exploring further.
With the exception of the mix up with the booking and delay getting into the lodge, it was a fantastic little trip away. Would I go again? For sure! I’d definitely recommend it. I’d say its suitable for most people, couples, families or even stag or hen parties. If you’d like more information, check out North Star Club. Have you visited North Star Club or somewhere similar?
